James Coffin

 
Essex County, Massachusetts was created on May 10, 1643 by the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, when it ordered "that the whole plantation within this jurisdiction be divided into four sheires."

James Coffin was born on August 20, 1640 in Brixton, Devon, England. He was the son of Tristram Coffin and Dionis Stevens.

He married Abigail Severance on December 3, 1663 in Salisbury, Essex County, Massachusetts.

James Coffin. Son of Tristram Coffin and Dionis Stevens. Born in England, 12 August, 1640. Married Mary, daughter of John and Abigail Severance of Salisbury, Mass., 3 December, 1663.

He was one of the first settlers of Nantucket; moved to Dover, N. H., where he lived in 1668; returned to Nantucket, and died there 28 July, 1720.
